Indoor plants: Start your indoor garden with these must-have items

If you’ve spent any time scrolling through design inspiration lately, you’ve probably noticed: Indoor plants are everywhere. They’re in trendy coffee shops, coworking spaces, and probably half the Zoom backgrounds you see. But this isn’t just an aesthetic trend — there are actual reasons to consider bringing plants into your workspace.

Your office environment affects you more than you realize. The air quality, the lighting, and overall aesthetic influence how you feel and how well you work. Indoor plants can help with that. Studies have shown that having plants in your workspace can improve air quality by filtering out toxins, boost your mood, and even increase productivity.

Beyond the science, there’s something inherently calming about having a bit of nature nearby. Whether you’re working from home or in a traditional office, adding some greenery to your space doesn’t require a green thumb or a massive investment. With the right plants and a bit of basic care, you can create a workspace that feels better and might actually help you work better, and these products can help you get started.

Start with your plants

I always recommend finding a local plant shop when starting an indoor garden (outdoor gardens, too). Shopping there will support local businesses, and it’s safer for the plants. But if you’re going to order online, you can browse the Costa Farms store on Amazon. Maybe start with a money tree, as the plant is said to bring good luck.

Or start with something edible

Gardening doesn’t have to be your only hobby — in fact, it’s the perfect companion for cooking. This Home Grown herb set will sit perfectly on a windowsill and provide you with the materials needed to grow cilantro, Genovese basil, chives, and Italian parsley.

Grow your trash

If you eat fruits and vegetables, you’re likely throwing a lot of perfectly good seeds in the garbage. These can be used to grow plants, even if it’s just for fun. With some water and patience, the pit of an avocado can sprout and begin forming a tree. This Lawei kit gives you the tools you need to get started and watch the roots take shape.

Decorate with pots

If you plan on adding plants to your indoor space, you’ll need some pots that look good without sticking out too much. These ceramic Le Tauci pots come in a set of three with a clean, simple design. Each one has a drainage hole and the set comes with saucers to collect any water that isn’t absorbed by the soil.

Or get a hanging pot set

If you’re short on shelf space, you may want some hanging pots. These Mkono ceramic planters are perfect for succulents or hanging plants and are supported by macrame ropes with three points of contact. The simple design makes it a perfect addition to a minimalist space, but if you need to move your plant outside, the Mkono planters also work outdoors.

Feed your plants

You’ll need to add soil to your pots to help your plants grow. You may already have some, or you can buy some online, but some indoor plants need an extra boost. It can help to add some plant food, like this formula from Miracle-Gro that’s specially designed for your indoor greenery.

Add some light

One key element missing from your home: the sun. Generally, the more windows you have, the better, but there are other solutions. You can buy a full spectrum plant light to help promote growth when the sun isn’t shining, like this tall, skinny Barrina lamp. The vertical grow light doesn’t take up much space, but offers plenty of light so your plants won’t have to compete for window space.

Make an existing lamp plant-friendly

If you already have a lamp, you just need to pop in a grow light bulb to make it plant-friendly. Briignite’s full-spectrum LED bulbs will keep your plants happy when there’s limited sunlight, and you won’t have to replace your existing lamp.

Get an all-in-one plant stand

You may want to keep all of your plants in one place, even if you have a growing collection. This decorative plant stand has a tree-like shape with plenty of surface space for all of your pots. Plus, it has a built-in grow light, so it’ll be a good plant home, even if it’s not placed directly next to the window.

Go high-tech

If you want to go all-in with your indoor garden, check out Gardyn’s tower systems. They have space for up to 30 plants, depending on the model you buy, and it is a perfect solution for a green thumb that’s stranded indoors. The system has grow lights, a water tank for self-watering, and a built-in camera so you can monitor growth with time-lapse photos.
